Evaluation: I complete the following:
• I followed all the instructions dictated
• I brought all my materials (lab coat)
• I had a good behavior during the lab
• I made successfully my experiment
• I worked in-group as asked
• I enjoyed working with a didactic activity
Conclusion questions:
- How is your prediction match up with you observation?
They were close but not accurate, were almost all right but I missed some ones and made a few mistakes while predicting the reactions.
- Why were sodium and calcium not tested with acid?
Because they would react explosively and vigorously , putting in danger our security while doing the lab.
- Predict a metal not tested here that would a. react vigorously b. not react with water or dilute hydrochloric acid
A. potassium is a metal that would react with water or dilute hydrochloric acid
B. silver is a metal that would not react with water or dilute hydrochloric acid
- Write word and symbol equation for the reactions
Zinc:
- Zinc does not react with water
- Zinc + hydrochloric acid —> zinc chloride + hydrogen
- Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) —> ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g)
Sodium:
- sodium + water —> sodium hydroxide solution + hydrogen
- 4Na(s) + 4H2O(l) —> 4NaOH(aq) + 2H2(g)
- Sodium + dilute hydrochloric acid —> sodium chloride + hydrogen
- 2Na(s) + 2HCl(aq) —> 2NaCl(aq) + H2(g)
Calcium:
- Calcium + water —> calcium hydroxide + hydrogen
- Ca(s) + 2H2O(l) —> Ca(OH)2(aq) + H2(g)
- calcium + dilute hydrochloric acid —> calcium chloride + hydrogen
- Ca(s) + 2HCl(aq) —> CaCl2(aq) + H2(g)
Copper:
- Copper does not react with water.
- Copper does not react with hydrochloric acid
Lead:
- Lead does not react with water
- lead + hydrochloric acid —> lead chloride + hydrogen
- Pb(s) + 2HCl(aq) —> PbCl2(aq) + H2(g)
Iron:
- Iron does not react with water
- iron + hydrochloric acid —> iron chloride + hydrogen
- Fe(s) + 2HCl(aq) —> FeCl2(aq) + H2(g)
Magnesium:
- Magnesium + water —> magnesium hydroxide solution + hydrogen
- Mg(s) + 2H2O(l) —> Mg(OH)2(s) + H2(g)
- magnesium + hydrochloric acid —> magnesium chloride + hydrogen
- Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) —> MgCl2(aq) + H2(g)
