When they return to school, Albus Dumbledore announces that Hogwarts will host a legendary event, the Three Wise Tournament. The tournament brings together three schools and one candidate is chosen from each school to compete in three dangerous tests. The remaining champion will win 1000 galleons. The schools that will meet are the Beauxbatons Magic Academy and the Durmstrang Institute, as well as Hogwarts.

There is a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher named Alastor Moody. He teaches them about the Unforgivable Curses, and tells them that if someone used them on a human being, they would go to Azkaban for life. One of them is the Cruciatus curse with the spell "Crucio" which is the tormenting curse; the Imperius curse, that makes you do what your attacker wants and worst of all, murderous lamaldición, that instantaneously kills the one over who is used.

To enter the tournament, the name of the person should be written on a piece of parchment and cast fire. For safety, only students 17 years of age or older will be allowed.

When the fire chalice chooses the champions, choose Fleur Delacour of Beauxbatons, Viktor Krum of Durmstrang and Cedric Diggory of Hogwarts. However, without warning, he also chose Harry Potter, although he had not even postulated.

Harry can not withdraw from the tournament, and there is nothing Dumbledore can do. Ron, however, gets annoyed with Harry because he thinks Harry did put his name on the goblet, and did not tell him he had.

Rita Skeeter, a reporter for The Prophet, begins to write false stories about Harry. On the other hand, Hermione begins to inquire about the rights of the house elves, and creates the P.E.D.D.O, an association that protects the rights of the elves
