Part C
An exhibit that caught my attention was “Sensuous Wisdom” from the Boston artist Nan Tull. The spectacular exhibit from Nan Tull is a collection of 25 Years of Painting and Drawing by the artist. In this exhibition I was touched by Tull’s Beauty 4584. The materials used to create Black Beauty 4584 are charcoal and oil-paint stick on paper. Black Beauty 4584 is a drawing that was created in the year 1984 and it represents a dark moment for Nan Tull’s life. In 1983, Tull’s life was ruined with personal loss and illness that required months of recovery. Friends brought her amaryllis plants as get-well offerings, but the heating unit in her studio didn’t work, and they died. In her first period, the artist started to draw the amaryllis plants, and although she didn’t like charcoal, she started to use it because the coal slag reminder her of the flower. The black quality of the charcoal represents the dark period of Nan Tull’s illness. Nan Tull’s Black Beauty 4584 has a monochromatic palette, and has a dimension of 30” x 22" inches. This piece has a regular size compared to other of her imposing works. After entering to the main room, and looking to the artworks from left to right, I got a sense that a flower was blooming. Maybe it represents how the artist peeled away from her illness. My first impression of the artwork was that it looked like a male sex organ. Even though, Tull work is not explicitly sexual, it’s impossible not to read sex into many of these images.
Part D
Another artwork that I enjoyed was Suspension: Heat Wave by Nan Tull. Suspension: Heat Wave was created in the year 2007, and has a dimension of 14” x 14" inches. When I went to visit the Danfoth museum, I had an emotional reaction for the vivid colors of this piece. The vertical bars of various width glowed with the warm color of the background. When I was looking the piece in big scale I was able to see the artist precision when she created the lines. No only that, but the physical experience allowed me to experience the different layers of the wax surface. In contrast, looking this artwork in the computer was a completely different experience. The texture of the piece and the details of the surface were lost. The colors were more saturated; and the vivid colors that I saw were replaced with darker and opaque colors. My impact for the artwork lessened as a result, I believe that art looks totally different in person. When I saw Tull’s Suspension: Heat Wave in the computer, I couldn’t notice the dimension or the quality of the piece. I prefer to look and artwork in person because it allows me to experience the scale, texture, surface, and three-dimensionality.
My visit to the Danforth Museum was an opportunity to discover and experience new types of art. I believe that every artwork that I saw had an impact of how I see art. I was particularly identified by Nan Tull’s artwork because we come from a different culture. Similar to Tull’s artwork, I’ve been drawing for a few years now and my inspirations come from different memories and anecdotes. Overall, I felt that my visit to the Danforth Museum was a great learning experience because I got the chance to learn more from different artist’s styles and techniques.
