In this way Curran poses two types of learning contrasted with the CLL view of learning. The first one is intellectual, this process is considered as the main intention of learning; it involves the acquisition of both theoretical and practical knowledge through a process of communication of ideas and concepts transmitted through language. The second is the behavioral vision of learning, in which Curran relates it with animal learning, referring to the learners as passives subjects with limited participation.

In short, the CLL has holistic view of learning, since human learning is both cognitive and affective.

Characteristic of Community Language Learning

This is a method where students are the protagonists of the class, they start talking in their mother tongue and then the teacher helps them to translate in the target language what they are saying. Through meaningful conversations students are going to develop the class with a topic of their preference that makes them feel comfortable, with the teacher supports, so his role is as a counselor. Another characteristic of this method is the use of techniques to develop and facilitate the class; some of them are recording, listening, transcription, translation, etc.

Goals of this method

The most important goal of this method is that students can learn how to use the target language in a fluent and communicative way, with the advices of the teacher to reduce the anxiety and solve their problems, also to transform students in whole persons, I mean, independent people.

Role of the Teacher and Students

The characters implicated in this method have a specific role; in the case of the teacher, he or she plays a role of counselor, responding with tolerance and nonjudgmental, and helping the client to have a good performance in class, providing a safe environment to understand problems better. Students play a role as learners or knowers; also they are called clients. Learning is best seen as an achievement collectively than individually, for this reason, in this method learners become members of a community. Students learn through counseling with their teacher and classmates. They listen carefully to the knower, repeat the target utterances, support fellow members of the community, report deep inner feelings, and act as counselors to other learners.

Based on the theory, develop a class activity and explain it in your writing

Based in the Community Language Learning method, one of the most used activities is called “From letters to grammar”

To develop this activity, the teacher is going to say some letters of the alphabet; students should be attentive, and pay attention to the letter that the teacher said. The intention of this activity is that students can create a complete phrase with the letters given, it doesn’t matter the order. For example:

The teacher gives to the students: I – S – F – A – P

- She Is A Friendly Person.

- France Is A Save Place

Conclusion

In conclusion the advantages of this method is that we can feel confident in a group, not afraid to speak, we can share our experiences and the teacher does not judge, is counseling, there is cooperative not competition, teacher’s responsibility in community language learning is to recognize each learner’s feelings and their level of target language because the feedback from the teacher to the learner is important in this method.
