In nineteen-thirty seven I traveled again to Spain to cover the Civil War for the North American Newspaper Alliance –or NANA- and there I met the correspondent for Collier's magazine and author of short stories: Martha Gellhorn. I was in love with her.

In the spring of nineteen-thirty nine, I navigate to Cuba to live in the Hotel Ambos Mundos in Havana. That was the first phase of my separation from Pauline and my influence on the island. Shortly after, Martha joined me in Cuba and rent Finca Vigia. As I had done after the divorce from Hadley, I changed residences, moving my main summer residence to Ketchum (Idaho) and leaving the one in Cuba, as the winter residence.

I married Martha in nineteen-forty, and for labor reasons more than sentimental issues we went to China and there, for a few months, my wife covered the Sino-Japanese conflict while I was supporting her but I did not like that country. We returned to Cuba before the declaration of war by the United States in December and I suggested the Cuban government to re-equip my boat the Pilar with the intention of ambushing German submarines off the coast of Cuba.

During the last years of World War I, I returned to Europe and in my first trip to London, I fell in love with another woman, Mary Welsh, a correspondent for Time magazine.

As an act of fate, I had a car accident and my wife wanted to come to meet me. Unfortunately I could not get a ticket press plane so she had to cross the Atlantic in a boat loaded with explosives. When she arrived in London, I was accused of being a bully and she ended our marriage. Still recovering from the accident, I participated in air missions and covered as a correspondent for the Normandy landings, the liberation of Paris and the battle of Hürtgen Forest, therefore I received the Bronze Star for bravery and I had the post of reporter first US Army.

After passing the War, I married Mary and stayed in Cuba until nineteen-sixty, then I moved to Ketchum.

I didn’t stop writing even though countless tragedies that were around my wife and me. Several times I was at the gates of death ... in World War One by shrapnel wounds of a mortar, in Spanish Civil War when bombs exploded in the hotel room where I was staying, in World War Two when we hitted a taxi during the blackouts plus two car accidents, when being in Africa on safari my plane crashed twice; and not only that, also I survived burns from forest fires, Anthrax, malaria, pneumonia, dysentery, skin cancer, hepatitis, anemia, diabetes, a skull fracture, a ruptured spleen and crushed vertebra; suffered from high blood pressure and I had a damaged liver and kidney. Obviously, all this left me with a lot of pain and a poor physical and mental health, which only worsened with my deplorable "medication with alcohol." I must emphasize that, like my father, I had tendencies to paranoia and depression. So serious was my state at that time that they had to move me to Minnesota and hospitalize me twice at the Mayo Clinic and treat me with electric shocks.

I could not take it anymore ... when I was discharged from the clinic I returned to my home in Ketchum and I ended up taking my own life on July two, nineteen-sixty one, shooting myself in the mouth with a shotgun

And I tell you a secret ?: I was not the only one in my family to commit suicide (my dad, my brothers, and my nephew)
