The damage that interferes with this translation can prevent the formation of long-term memories, while the old survive; why some people with brain damage or illness can remember events from long ago but not in the recent past.

Results so far

According to the researchers they said at the International Congress of the Society for Engineering in Medicine and Biology IEEE, held in Milan, the prosthesis and the algorithm achieved good results in tests in animals (rats and monkeys) and is now being tested in humans.

The algorithm has been tested in nine people with epilepsy who had electrodes implanted in the hippocampus to treat chronic seizures. To do this, the researchers read the electrical signals input and output to be generated in the brains of patients while they performed simple tasks, like remembering the position of different shapes on the screen of a computer. The results were used to refine the algorithm to achieve predict how signals are translated with 90% accuracy.

Next steps and other research in this field

The next step will be to send the translated signal back to the brain of patients with damage to the hippocampus, hoping that overlook the point of conflict and form an accurate long-term memory.

The project of the USC and Wake Forest is a clear example of progress in Neurotechnology by scientists around the world. However, other research has a very different goal: getting people who are paralyzed can carry out simple movements with robotic arms or even their own limbs thanks to the implantation of a device.

This is the only ongoing investigation that is trying to use computers to manipulate memory signals directly into the human brain.
