The name was retaken especially in Spain to refer to "flight attendant". Before the world "azafata" was only used for women flight attendants, but later Spanish speakers began using analog masculine form, changing "a" to "o" and they called “azafato”.The new flight attendants, which were also called air hostesses and became an integral part pf the aviation industry.

Later, They started to called them in different ways, for example, azafata,aeromoza,auxiliar de vuelo,asistente de vuelo, aerobombon, aeronena, etc and in English they began to called them stewards, stewardess, flight attendant service, flight attendant hostells ect.

In 1930, The requiment for having a nursing degree, began to be unnecessary in the Second World War, there weren’t enough nurses, due to the needs of the conflicto,they had to hire other people with different titles.

ELLEN CHURCH

She was born on September 22, 1904 in Iowa, Unied States, which was the first flight attendant on May 15, 1930 on a flight between Oakland and Chicago aboard a Boeing 80-A, an airline three-engined Boeing Air Transport, Now known as United Airlines.

She was a passionate aviation woman, She studied to become a pilot with Holpe that could fight a plane bound for the first time, the time she decided to look for a job at the BAT of 23 February 1930, There she had a meeting with Steven Stimpson, who saw the need to control staff who traveled on flights. Steven Stimpson didn’t accept , but Ellen made him realize that the nurses were the best fot this kind if job, because the pilot or passanger could get sick and need assistance will be needed during the flight

Ellen retired from flying after 18 months due to a car accident, and she dedicated to teaching at the University of Minnesota. In the World War II, she returned to flying as a captain of the "Nurse Corps service army air evacuation "and received the air medal for her service in north Africa, England and France.

After her particitation in the Second World War, She became the Director of nursing in "Terre Haute Union Hospital" Indiana. In 1964, she married Leonard Marshall Director of National Banck flirts Terre Haute.

She died on Agoust 22, 1965, when she was riding a horse. In her honor, there is a statue at the airport called ELLEN CHURCH FIELD.

CREATION OF THE COLOMBIAN ASSOCIATION OF FLIGHT ATTENDANTS.

In 1961, Hernando Ortiz and Ramiro Castro was concerned about irregularities and abuses that occurred every day with his assistants fellow passengers. Therefore, They decided to create the "ACAV" Colombian Association of Flight Attendants.

On 7 April the same year, they acquired legal status residing in Bogota and there the first board headed by President Hernando Ortiz and the Secretary General Ramiro Castro, was held presenting petitions to the company Avianca. However requests weren’t taken into account by Avianca. As a result, in August 1961 they declared the first hunger strike supported by all Avianca flight attendants in front of the "Plaza de Bolivar. With this strike they got some rights, but the most important was the recognition that this association received.

In 1972, they conducted other strike, behind the maintenance hangars of avianca, leadered by Alfonso Cabanzo and Jaime Torres. With this strike, they got:

• The regulation of working conditions.

• To establish a control of flight hours as the hours of flight exceeded 120 hours.

• The transfer of personnel to the international branch as (at that time they were 2 Colombians for 8 foreigners).

• To earn a fee per hour of flight.

• Confirmation of days off

• Unify lunch

As a result of this strike, Alfonso Cabanzo was fired as well as other partners. Five years later he was reinstated.

In 1979, Braniff flight attendants, joined the "ACAV" followed by Eastern in 1981, and then the flight attendants from America Airlines joined in 1990. Flight attendants of British Airways, Aerorepublica and Aires they also joined the association

Currently, the association is composed by more than 500 flight attendants from different airlines around the world.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT AS A PROFESSION

Over the years, the role of flights attendant has changed, becoming attractive to travel and see the world. Many flight attendants are showim in different exotic locations around the world with beautiful uniforms, those advertisements aroused the interest of many girls.

Unfortunately, not everything can be perfect, the requirements imposed by airlines was very strict. Seeing that flight attendants began to get tired of so many rules, airlines decided to control working conditions. Airlines changed their uniforms, for convenience of the crew, working time and wages were also controlled.

The first responsibility of flight attendants in the development of their work supervice all the time, the safety of passengers, but the most visible part of this work, customer service, food service and drinks, and be attentive to needs of passengers. A flight attendant must be a person with a sense of belonging, excellent personal presentation, responsible, leading and most importantly, they must have a vocation of service. People have the concept that flight attendant is only the person who is in charge of the food and drinks, but the main function is the safety of passengers and flight.

WHAT IS THE WORK OF A FLIGHT ATTENDANT

A flight attendant is responsible for ensuring the safety of each flight and in the same way they guarantees a good flight for passengers, demonstrating their experience gained through the years.

A flight attendant must serve passengers in the best way, explaining the safety process, they must prepare for an incident or accident and must demonstrate a warm and calm attitude, they should serve different dishes and drinks, resolve passengers concerns or suggestions, speak different languages, work together with their coworkers and be passionate about their work and aviation.
