There are several laws and decrees that influence the functioning and faculties of the Institute. Among others, there are Article 123 of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, the Federal Labor Law and the Law of Infonavit. In the latter "the objectives were to manage the resources of the National Housing Fund and to provide cheap and sufficient loans to workers to:

Acquire comfortable and hygienic rooms.

The construction, repair, extension or improvement of their rooms.

The payment of liabilities contracted for the previous concepts.

1974: The construction of the headquarters building of Infonavit begins. Previously, this one was in a rented building located in Paseo de la Reforma 231.

1999: The Complaints, Complaints and Responsibilities Management is created.

2001: The website is developed with consultation services.

2002: Infonatel begins operations

2004: Cofinavit loan launched

2006: The Planning, Risks, Quality of Life, Nomination and Compensation committees were founded following a reform of the Infonavit Law. Payment Protection Insurance is implemented.

2007: Initiates the granting of green mortgages.

2014: The guidelines of the National Housing Policy of the government of Enrique Peña Nieto are adopted. Credit begins to be implemented in pesos for all salary ranges.

2015: The expenses of titulación are eliminated. A collaboration between the Infonavit-Fovissste is generated to allow the union of conjugal credits or the portability of the savings of the workers.

2017: A 70% increase in the maximum amount of credit is announced, which will apply as of April 4, 2017. This increase allows credit of up to $ 1,604,132.30 (one million 604 thousand pesos with 30 cents), giving To the families the opportunity to acquire a house to their liking. It is important to mention that this increase applies not only to the aforementioned Traditional Credit, but also to the Infonavit Total product, which increased to $ 1,831,327.01 (one million, 831,332 pesos), and to Cofinavit, whose amount grows to $ 413,081.21.

The headquarters of Infonavit are located at Avenida Barranca del Muerto 280, in Mexico City, in a building very important for the architecture of the city. The project was carried out by the architects Abraham Zabludovsky and Teodoro González de León, who designed a building with the following characteristics:

The most affluent offices would be located on the ground floor, to facilitate access to the beneficiaries.

A mostly horizontal building was chosen to reduce elevator service.

The materials used had to be sober and of high quality.

Create a pleasant environment in terms of visual, ventilation and lighting.

Have a library, a cafeteria, meeting rooms and work.

They used national techniques and materials.

Make a building that was an example of the high quality of Mexican architecture and engineering.

In this building was used for the first time in a construction of great proportions, the stony finish of the architects Zabludovsky and Teodoro González de León. Of the latter, said Octavio Paz, is not a classicist architect, but builds modern art inspired by the lesson of the classics, that is, order, measure and proportion.

To promote ecological awareness among its workers and the general public, on June 7, 2011, INFONAVIT inaugurated the largest green roof in Latin America. This green roof has 5 000 square meters, a wide variety of plants, 300 meters of jogging track and a space to exercise in yoga. The specialists who developed the project recommended a system for roof waterproofing, resistant to roots and maintenance free:

For drainage, a high-density polyethylene membrane that functions as a protective and drainage system.

The then president of Mexico Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, in order to continue fomenting the ecological conscience, ordered that the effort is replicated in all dependencies of the Federal Government.
